EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
