Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
